Safe and Secure Ethernet Switch for Time Sensitive Networking (TSN)



NXP Semiconductors has announced a multi-gigabit Ethernet switch. It is designed to help automakers deliver the high-speed networks required for evolving connected vehicles.

Connected device nowadays requires sophisticated service-oriented gateways and domain controllers. This device accommodates connected services such as over-the-air updates and emerging data-driven applications. It also supports the underlying ethernet-based web sensors, actuators and processing unit.

Integrated with a power management IC

The NXP SJA1110 is claimed to be the first automotive Ethernet switch with in-built safety capabilities. It offers an integrated 100BASE-T1 PHYs hardware-assisted security combined with multi-gigabit interfaces. The switch is Optimized for integration with NXP’s S32G vehicle network processor.

The SJA1110 switch is also a part of an overall networking solution including the VR5510 power management IC. Together, this solution addresses the biggest challenges facing vehicle networking today. These challenges are largely related to scalability, safety, security and high-speed traffic engineering.

Uses TSN standards

The SJA1110 Ethernet switch helps carmakers obtain the scalability, security and performance. It provides the right mix of hardware features and a balanced number of ports for high and low-port-count ECUs. The SJA1110 is aligned to the latest TSN standards.


The SJA1110 enables customers to meet their ASIL requirements and enrich the safety capabilities of the vehicle. It does so by implementing dedicated failure-detection mechanisms that enable predictive maintenance solutions. It reduces the cost of large designed systems. Additionally, it also improves efficiency for large fleet management firms.

The Switch is available in four hardware (HW) and software (SW) compatible variants. It is powered with NXP’s original software and an open integrated controller. The BOM is optimised for rapid prototyping. The SJA1110 switch provides a solid foundation for scalable ECU designs for complex gateways, advanced driving assistance systems and infotainment units.

NXP Automotive Network System Solution

The SJA1110 Ethernet switch is optimized for integration with S32G vehicle network processors as part of an automotive network system solution. It includes the VR5510 PMIC. S32G and SJA1110 processors enable the automotive industry to shift to high-performance vehicle architectures. It also provides reduced software complexity and enhanced security and safety. The primary role of S32G processors is to develop service-oriented gateways. This further help OEMs to utilise data-driven service.
