EMI stands for electromagnetic interference. When dealing with radio frequency, it is addressed as radio-frequency interference. These interferences can cause a disturbance with electronic devices. In turn, these disturbances can degrade and limit the effectiveness of a circuit within the device.
Current electronic products require measures to minimise the effects of radio-frequency and electromagnetic interferences.

Harwin has announced the introduction of three new shielding cans. This can help design engineers while dealing with EMI/RFI issues in their PCB designs. These cans are supplied in a tape-and-reel format. It is a new addition to the company’s existing range of EMC products. These new cans measure dimensions of 10mm x 10mm, 15mm x 10mm and 30mm x 10mm. All these can have a constant height of three mm and a thickness of 0.15 mm.
Compact five-sided design
Each can is made from a single piece of unplated Nickel Silver alloy. It is designed in a simple and compact five-sided shape. These cans can be easily fitted over a PCB board. This eliminates the need for secondary soldering operations. Shielding elements can be attached with clips to ease soldering process of this component. It decreases the risk of damaging sensitive circuitry through exposure to extreme heat produced during hand soldering.
Neil Moore, Product Manager for EMC & Industrial Products at Harwin Industries, talked about the product saying,
“Tackling electromagnetic emissions is a vital aspect of modern electronic designs, particularly for those involved in wireless communication. The simple shielding cans and clips from Harwin have gained widespread popularity with electronics engineers. Now we are delivering a wider choice, aimed at helping with EMC requirements in the smallest handheld and wireless applications.”
Easy plug-n-play usage
These removable cans also provide easy access to the devices and circuitry underneath these insulative cans. This feature is essential while in a number of instances such as PCB reworks, maintenance or component replacement.
These cans can simply be unplugged and re-inserted as required. It also removes inconvenient de-soldering and solder clean-up methods from the rework processes. These processes are required by other EMC can styles.
Available in larger volumes
According to the company, Harwin EMI/RFI shielding products are available in larger volumes for shipping. These products are suitable for a diverse set of markets such as military, aerospace, medical, fluid sealing, environmental and microwave applications.
