The Modbus TCP protocol is used to transmit information between electronic devices. It helps in controlling and supervising automation equipment. This option allows users to remotely program, measure and checks status of the power supply. It does so, by sending information using a TCP/IP protocol.
Six operating modes
TDK recently announced a Modbus TCP interface option for the Genesys+ series. This series is a collection of programmable DC power supplies. According to the company, this interface has six different user operating modes. It includes LAN, RS-232/RS-485, USB, remote isolated analogue, and front panel (local) interfaces.
The Modbus TCP interface can be controlled by remotely isolated analogue signals. Regardless of working on this mode, the Modbus TCP interface can still be used to monitor the Genesys+ functionality. It is a 2-port interface and contains two shielded RJ-45 connectors. These connectors allow multiple power supplies to be connected to the interface with their unique IP addresses.
31 connections share one IP address
The RS 485, on the other hand, allows the connection of up to 31 power supplies using a link cable and one shared IP address. It uses a multi-drop technique. It manages the currently active connections in a network.
The Modbus TCP interface can communicate over any standard TCP/IP network, including LAN and WAN. Additionally, it also supports ping servers that help in coordinated mapping of the network.
Supports waveform creator software
For software supports, a waveform creator and a virtual front panel GUI are provided in the software package. The IP and Mac address may be viewed on the GUI. It helps in setting up the device network configurations. The device is equipped with a REM indicator that identifies remote operation over a network.
The company informed that the device also contains an in-built web page interface. It provides the user with a capability to read and configure the Ethernet configuration parameters. A user can also see Modbus TCP statistics and verify network communications.
Programmable TCP interface
TDK also told that the device is available with full remote program/monitor functions. It is compatible with Modbus TCP test & measurement utilities. This device can be programmed using TCP sockets and support PLCs, Linux and other non-VISA controllers. Additionally, it supports up to four multiple socket connections at port 502.
The option is available on all models ranging from the 1U high half-rack GH1.5kW to the 3U high full rack GSP15kW. With all these features, this device can be a good solution to large communication networks.
