Micro-Sized Buck Converter Can Save PCB Space in Low power Devices

Buck converters are used in DC-devices to provide a regulated output to the system. Low-power buck converters support the need for small size solutions. It also helps in the development of low-cost systems.

Analog Devices has recently added a new product in their series of micromodule buck regulators. The LTM4668 is a quad DC/DC step-down µModule (micromodule) regulator. This regulator is rated to provide a continuous current of up to 1.2 amperes per output.

Outputs of LTM4668 can be used parallelly in an array. This can provide a constant current output of up to five amperes to the connected load.


This power module has dimensions of 6.25mm × 6.25mm × 2.1mm. It comes in a BGA package. The LTM4668 features a single-on-chip design which includes a switching controller, power FETs, inductors and support components. This regulator can work in a wide operating range of 2.7 Volt up to 17 Volt. It supports an output voltage range of 0.6V up to 1.8V.

Burst operation mode for maximum power output

There is a need for capacitors at the input and output of the circuit. This device supports frequency synchronization and poly-phase operation with the target device. The device supports adjustable output power. It also has a selectable burst mode. In this mode, it can work at 100 per cent duty cycle with a low IQ operation.

Protection from overvoltage, overcurrent and overtemperature

The device features a high switching frequency. Additionally, its low current mode architecture enables a very fast transient response to line and load changes of the circuit. It features fault protection sensors which protect the board from being damaged. These sensors provide protection to the circuit in conditions like overvoltage, overcurrent and overtemperature.

Combining all these salient features, this regulator can be used in a wide number of applications. This includes the development of telecom, networking and industrial Equipment,multi-rail Point of load regulation and development of FPGAs, DSPs and ASICs applications.
