OmniVision announces cost-Effective, high-resolution global shutter image sensors for consumer, industrial machine vision applications

Machine vision applications are experiencing strong growth, fueled by increased demand for industrial automation and new use cases such as augmented reality and virtual reality. As computer vision algorithms are becoming more and more sophisticated, the performance requirements of image sensors have escalated.

With two new high-resolution global shutter image sensors—the OG02B1B/OG02B10 and the OV9285, OmniVision is offering cost-effective solutions for a wide range of consumer and industrial machine vision applications. In particular, the company says that OEMs developing products for high-growth markets such as AR/VR headsets and accessories, industrial automation, robotics, agricultural drones and 3D modeling will benefit from these higher-resolution global shutter image sensors that can quickly capture precise images of fast-moving or faraway objects while consuming very little power.

For designs demanding high resolution with the option for full-color imaging, OmniVision offers the 2-megapixel OG02B1B (monochrome) and the OG02B10 (color) image sensors. Both versions provide 1600 x 1300 resolution in a 1/2.9-inch optical format and a 15-degree chief ray angle (CRA) to support wide field-of-view lens designs.

The company says this combination of color imaging and CRA is excellent for applications such as agricultural drones that must capture high-resolution color images for crop and field monitoring.

The OV9285 provides an even more cost-effective option, with a 1.48 megapixel or 1328 x 1120 resolution, the ability to capture video at 90 frames per second (FPS) and an optical format of 1/3.4-inch with a CRA of 9 degrees, according to the company.

Both sensors are built on OmniVision’s 3 x 3-micron OmniPixel3-GS pixel technology. This global shutter sensor technology is said to eliminate motion artifacts and blurring. It also provides high quantum efficiency and excellent near-infrared (NIR) sensitivity at 850nm and 940nm, which reduces power consumption and extends device battery life.
