Design of robust ESD circuits remains challenging to engineers due to a trend towards highly congested PCBs and higher susceptibility of smaller circuit components. ESD events may cause undesirable operation in a circuit and possible damage due to human contact, which is a major cause of electronic equipment failures during circuit assembly or in the field. These issues are estimated to reduce assembly-line productivity by up to 33%.

Offering designers more flexibility to address a variety of applications where ESD events during assembly or operation could damage the capacitor or the circuit, KEMET has expanded its ESD-rated commercial and automotive grade surface mount capacitors in X7R and C0G dielectrics into a complete product portfolio.

Applications for these capacitors include infotainment, navigation systems, controllers, airbags, and keyless entry systems.


The automotive and commercial grade capacitors are now available in EIA 0402, 0603, 0805 and 1206 case sizes with voltage ratings of 16 to 250 VDC.

These devices provide miniaturization and enhanced flexibility to optimize ESD suppression, RF filtering, blocking, sensing, and circuit protection, according to the firm.

Human Body Model (HBM) provides much insight into device behavior during an ESD event. Kemet says these capacitors allow engineers to design to given ESD criteria per the Human Body Model (HBM) AEC Q200–002 criteria.

The ESD Automotive Grade series capacitors also meet the demanding Automotive Electronics Council’s AEC-Q200 qualification requirements.
