Fast NOR Chip Brings Instant-on IoT

In the era of smartphones, consumers expect their modern electronic and digital devices equipped with graphical user interfaces to perform with real-time system responsiveness and be portable with instant connectivity. To achieve this, many applications such as fitness bands, smart watches, small medical equipment, smart meters, smart industrial sensors, etc. call for a successful memory solution with careful consideration of memory size, power consumption, and performance.

In order to get “instant-on” performance and real-time system responsiveness in automotive, industrial and consumer applications, Macronix said that its 8-bit I/O Serial NOR Flash memory chip MX25LM is incorporated in the new STM32L4+ microcontroller Discovery Kits and Evaluation Boards from ST.

The MX25LM can perform up to an operational frequency of 250MHz with 500MB/s read throughput, claimed the fastest in the NOR Flash industry.

As per the announcement, the chips complement STM32L4+ MCUs that are equipped to operate as the central controller in a full range of fitness bands, smart watches, small medical equipment, smart meters, smart industrial sensors and more, which require sophisticated functions, instant responses and minimal downtime for battery charging.

To allow application developers achieve these goals, the STM32L4+ is said to deliver high processor performance with the largest on-chip memory in its class of ultra-low-power microcontrollers. It also features the most advanced graphics capabilities for smooth and fluid user experiences.

As per ST, the new Chrom-GRC graphics controller can handle circular displays (TFT-LCDs) just as efficiently as square ones, without wasting resources managing pixels that are never displayed. An on-chip innovative Chrom-ART Accelerator enhances graphics performance.
