Ceva’s IP Solves Challenges Of 5G Modem Design


CEVA has unveiled PentaG, a 5G intellectual property (IP) platform for enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB). The platform targets designers of 5G smartphones, fixed wireless access and embedded devices. It is compliant to the 3GPP 5G New Radio (NR) Release-15 and software upgradable for Release-16.

PentaG supports a gamut of applications like smartphones, fixed wireless access and the many other embedded devices that can take advantage of multi-gigabit data rates to enable use cases such as 4K video streaming, augmented reality, virtual reality, autonomous driving and home broadband.

The announcement notes that PentaG is built on CEVA’s expertise in DSPs for 2G, 3G and 4G LTE modem design that have been licensed and deployed by many wireless chip companies and smartphone OEMs.


PentaG is composed of special purpose DSPs and specialized acceleration co-processors, boasting to deliver up to 8x performance improvement for 5G functions compared to conventional approaches.

Of note is an innovative AI processor incorporated in the platform, that uses machine learning techniques to achieve optimal modem throughput.

Modular platform architecture allows customers to combine incumbent technologies together with PentaG modules, to tailor design to their specific enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) use case.
