Conquering Efficiency & Safety Hurdles In Renewable Energy Designs


Analog Devices recently announced an innovative, fully integrated power conversion platform to improve efficiency and safety in next-generation solar power, energy storage, and electric vehicle infrastructure applications.

Enabling breakthrough in power conversion design, the platform includes processing, gate driving, and sensing components.  By integrating ADI’s established iCoupler digital isolation technology with the new, mixed-signal processors (ADSP-CM41x), the platform simplifies system design for power inverter manufacturers while also improving system safety and reliability, and helping drive down the cost of renewable energy.

Analog devices emphasised that modern power systems must be carefully designed to protect the end user from electric shock and the system from physical destruction by isolating current measurement from the power-handling circuitry and transient signals.

The company said that its new ADSP-CM41x control processors, which are an integral part of the new platform, offer a pathway to faster and cost-efficient system development by reducing the need for complex external circuitry such as expensive sensor modules. This protection earlier came with the use of multiple redundant isolated components which increased both cost and complexity.


The ADSP-CM41x processors also offer designers with confidence in their own certification process being the only processors of their kind to be awarded a Certificate of Safety Attestation, VDE-AR-N4105, from TUV-SUD, according to the announcement.

Also included in the platform are the AD740x sigma-delta-based A/D converter and the ADuM413x series of isolated gate drivers, featuring iCoupler digital isolation technology.

An evaluation kit, the ADZS-CM419F-EZLITE, is also available to assist developers in evaluating and designing with the platform.
