Versatile Wire-to-Board Connectors Offer Cost & Space Savings


AVX has released two new series of wire-to-wire (WTW) connectors that are claimed to deliver considerable cost and space savings in an array of industrial power and signal applications, including smart grid meters, breakers, and panels; SSL fixtures, signage, and streetlights; commercial building controls, and security and fire sensors; and industrial machine controls, such as motors, drives, solenoids, sensors, fans, and pumps.

The new 9286-200 Series reduced thru-wire connectors and 9286-250 reduced junction box WTW connectors feature active stainless steel spring contacts that maximize strength and flexibility. The mechanical properties of this contact also allows them to provide maximum wire retention for 18-24 AWG solid and stranded wires, making these connectors very versatile in field installations, said AVX in the announcement.

The connectors provide a compact & cost-effective alternative to WTW connectors with traditional crimp & poke terminations. The development of an active stainless steel spring contact eliminates the need for push button activation to insert and remove wires which offers significant cost savings, according to the Press release.

“Wire-to-wire connectors have been a mainstay in the industrial market for years,” said Tom Anderson, connector product manager, AVX. “Until now, however, they’ve typically required crimp and poke wire terminations to connect discrete wires, which is effective with regard to pluggability and latching, but often prohibitive with regard to size and cost — especially in applications that will only need one or two wires replaced during a product’s lifetime. So, we designed our new 9286 family poke-home reduced thru-wire and junction box connectors to fulfill this gap in the broad industrial market by delivering enhanced strength, flexibility, and versatility, in addition to considerable cost and space savings.”

The new 9286 WTW connectors are rated for 300VAC and operating temperatures spanning -40 deg C to +130 deg C. The connectors measure 4mm in height and 16mm in length.

The 9286-200 Series connectors are available in one to six positions. Width ranges between 8mm and 24mm. Three current ratings include: 3A (24AWG), 5A (22 and 20AWG), and 8A (18AWG).

The 9286-250 series is available in four to eight positions, measuring between 8mm and 16mm in width. This series comes in four current ratings: 3A (24AWG), 7A (22AWG), 8A (20AWG), and 9A (18AWG).

Both series also feature a glass-filled Nylon 46 insulator (UL94V0), copper alloy fixed contact materials with tin-over-nickel plating, and a durability of three cycles.
