Dialog Semiconductor today announced a fast and efficient charging chipset for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. The Quick Charge 3.0 (QC3.0) chipset is claimed to offer nearly 40% more efficiency and easy pin compatible upgrade from prior version 2.0, and refuels mobile devices four times faster than conventional charging solutions. The solution also allows the design of compact AC/DC adapters with minimized heat dissipation and increased output power, claims the company.
The solution optimizes transformer design and minimizes charge time by offering a constant power profile for 3-amp USB-C charging. The chip leverages a iW1782 primary-side AC/DC controller and a iW636 secondary-side controller. However, an overall system efficiency of approximately 90 per cent can be acheived with a complementary digital green-mode synchronous rectifier controller, the iW673.

The new QC3.0 chip has now started volume production.
