Multiprotocol RS-485/RS-232 Chip Reduces Component Count


Linear Technology introduced a pin-configurable RS485/RS232 multi-protocol transceiver chip which can be configured as a half-duplex RS485 transceiver or as a RS232 transceiver using the same two bus pins. The LTC2873 can be widely used in single point-of-sale terminals, security cameras, traffic control and industrial automation for their flexibility in supporting these commonly used interface standards.

The multiprotocol chip provides a robust software-selectable interface for 3V to 5.5V systems with support for ±26kV HBM ESD bus protection. Additionally, an integrated DC/DC boost controller and pin-controlled RS485 integrated termination resistor eliminate the need for costly and space-consuming external circuitry.

Capable of operating on a 3V to 5.5V supply voltage range, the chip integrates one RS485 & one RS232 transceiver. RS485 supports 20Mbps while RS232 has selectable data rates of 1Mbps or 250kbps. The RS485 receiver supports up to 256 nodes per bus, and features full failsafe operation for floating, shorted or terminated inputs.


The LTC2873 is offered in commercial, industrial and automotive versions, supporting operating temperature ranges from 0°C to 70°C, -40°C to 85°C and -40°C to 125°C, respectively. The chip is available in a RoHS compliant 24-pin 4mm x 5mm QFN package.
