MPLAB X Integrated Development Environment (IDE) is a software program that runs on a PC (Windows, Mac OS, Linux) to develop applications for Microchip microcontrollers and digital signal controllers. It is called an IDE, because it provides a single integrated ‘environment’ to develop code for embedded microcontrollers.
MPLAB X IDE brings many changes to the PIC microcontroller development tool chain. Unlike previous versions of the MPLAB IDE which were developed completely in-house, MPLAB X IDE is based on the open source NetBeans IDE from Oracle. Taking this path has allowed us to add many frequently requested features very quickly and easily, while also providing us with a much more extensible architecture to bring you new features in the future. The latest PIC32MX1/MX2 series is supported by Microchip’s free MPLAB X IDE and MPLAB XC32 Compiler for PIC32, as stated in the release.
The release also mentions Microchip’s MPLAB Harmony software development framework that simplifies designs, by integrating the license, resale and support of Microchip and third-party middleware, drivers, libraries and Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS). Specifically, Microchip’s readily available software packages—including USB stacks and Graphics and Touch libraries can greatly reduce the development time of applications such as consumer, industrial and general-purpose embedded control.
According to Microchip, the MPLAB ICD 3 In-Circuit Debugger (part # DV164035) is priced at USD US$ 199.95 and MPLAB REAL ICE In-Circuit Emulation System (part # DV244005) costs US$ 499.98. Both the development tools are available across the globe.
