The latest polymer hermetic seal (PHS) capacitors from KEMET is ideally designed to meet the requirement of defense and aerospace applications that require high power, filtering, hold-up and current pulse generation.
As compared to wet tantalums, the PHS Series provides greater than 90 per cent lower ESR, 40 per cent increased ripple current capabilities and improved capacitance retention at high frequency and low temperature. As a result, PHS offers the highest total capacitance, surpassing wet tantalum performance. Additionally, these parts may be operated at voltages up to 80 per cent of rated voltage with equivalent or better reliability than traditional MnO2 or wet tantalum capacitors operated at 50 per cent of rated voltage. And under certain operating conditions, the PHS renders to be the most economical high power solution available. Solid internal construction drastically improves shock and vibration robustness, all within an approximately 25 per cnt lighter package than the equivalent wet tantalum capacitors.
According to the press release, KEMET’s M550 and M551 modular series are manufactured by placing T550 or T551 PHS capacitors in parallel. As stated in the release, the M55 Modular Series provides extremely low and stable ESR and enhanced capacitance retention at higher frequencies and low temperatures, resulting in the highest total capacitance and most economical solution for the high power applications.
Adding further the release mentions, “KEMET has qualified the discrete components used in the M55 Series to DLA Drawing 13030 to ensure these products are suitable for high reliability applications KEMET, in association with entities within the space community and several KEMET aerospace customers, has confirmed that the rigorous testing options included in this comprehensive drawing are applicable to standard and high reliability flight applications including space. Discrete parts qualified according this drawing are available options for this modular capacitance solution.”
The M55 Modules are available in two temperature offerings, 105°C (M550 Series) and 125°C (M551 Series). With reduced ESR and enhanced capacitance retention at higher frequencies and low temperatures, KEMET modules provide the highest total capacitance and the lowest total cost of ownership for high power applications.
