DOCSIS IC For Data Gateway Applications


ST has unveiled its new DOCSIS 3.1 (international telecommunication standard) SoC for data gateways that allows multiple system operators (MSOs) to build future-proof customer premises equipment (CPE) platforms with plenty of headroom to support the field introduction of new services. A typical application consists of broadband CPE cable modems, embedded media terminal adapters (eMTAs), and Gateways, as well as for video gateways when associated to set-top-box chipsets.

CPE is any terminal and associated equipment located at a subscriber’s premises and connected with a carrier’s telecommunication channel at the demarcation point. The demarcation is a point established in a building or complex to separate customer equipment from the equipment located in either the distribution infrastructure or central office of the communications service provider. It generally refers to devices such as telephones, routers, switches, residential gateways (RG), set-top boxes, fixed mobile convergence products, home networking adapters and Internet access gateways that enable consumers to access communications service providers’ services and distribute them around their house via a local area network (LAN). The MSO is an operator of multiple cable or direct-broadcast satellite television systems.

According to the media release, “The STiD325 (codename Barcelona) is STMicroelectronics’ next generation DOCSIS 3.1 device for data gateway applications. The STiD325 is built around a multi-Gigabit DOCSIS 3.1 modem fully certifiable by Cable Labs with full DOCSIS 3.0 backward compatibility. Besides DOCSIS modem, it embeds line-rate hardware-accelerated switching, routing, Wi-Fi bridging and a carrier grade telephony engine. The STiD325 is powered by a powerful multi-core 64-bit ARM CPU and comes pre-integrated with a RDK-B software. Using innovative 28 nm FD-SOI silicon technology, the SoC provides a cost-effective path for operators towards large-scale deployments.”
