First On-Chip NFC Tag For IoT Applications


Indivdiuals can now take advantage of NFC ‘touch-to-Pair’ with industry’s first on-chip Bluetooth Smart SoC as claimed by Nordic Semiconductors. The NFC-A tag support is embedded in the chip that allows out-of-band (OOB) pairing using NFC. This simplifies the process of authenticated pairing between two Bluetooth devices by exchanging authenticated information over an NFC link. Further pushing the envelope on to a single chip implementation the device uses 55nm process technology for today’s need for speed, speed to carry out increasingly complex tasks in the shortest possible time and return to sleep, conserving precious battery power.

According to the press release, “The nRF52 series SoC is a powerful, highly flexible ultra-low power multi-protocol SoC ideally suited for Bluetooth Smart ANT and 2.4GHz ultra low-power wireless applications. It is built around a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M4F CPU with 512kB + 64kB RAM. Without compromising on the speed, the processor meets the most demanding applications with complex arithmetic requirements realised in a single chip. It supports DSP instructions, a Floating Point Unit (FPU), single-cycle multiply and accumulate and hardware divide for energy-efficient process of computationally complex operations.”

The nRF52 series SoC embeds a 2.4GHz transceiver that supports Bluetooth Smart, ANT and proprietary 2.4GHz protocol stack as mentioned. In addition to this, the media release mentions that the launched IC is an extremely power-efficient device that can run from a supply between 1.7V and 3.6V. All individual peripherals and clocks offer complete flexibility of power-down when not required for task operation, thus, minimising power consumption to a minimum. The IC has a comprehensive system of automated and adaptive power management features ranging across the entire IC’s operation from power supply switching to peripheral bus/ EasyDMA memory management, to automated shut down of all but the absolute essential peripherals required to perform a task.

Addressing the need for miniaturised solution for the world of wearables devices, Nordic’s smallest Bluetooth Smart SoC is packaged in small dimension of 3.0 x 3.2mm (QFN).
