New Power Efficient Application Processors For IoT Applications


The new series of applications processors from Freescale with power efficient solution is ideally designed to meet the requirement of IoT applications. The i.MX 7 series is a new generation of power efficient and full featured applications processors based on its successful and broadly deployed i.MX platform. It is the industry’s first general purpose microprocessor family to incorporate both the ARM Cortex-A7 and the ARM Cortex-M4 cores.

The first members of the series are the new i.MX 7Solo and i.MX 7Dual product families, which feature Cortex-A7 cores operating up to 1GHz and a Cortex-M4 core operating up to 266MHz. The Cortex-A7 and Cortex-M4 achieve processor core efficiency levels of 100 μW /MHz and 70 μW /MHz respectively. All of the cores can be individually power-enabled to perform as needed. Emphasising on the performance-on-demand architecture, the release mentions that it allows the i.MX 7 series to meet the bursty, high-performance needs of running Linux, graphical user interfaces, wireless stacks or other high-bandwidth data transfers with one or both of the Cortex-A7 cores.

According to the press release, “The i.MX 7 series is a highly integrated multi-market applications processor designed to enable secure and portable applications within the Internet of Things. Its heterogeneous asymmetric architecture provides the ultimate flexibility for customers by enabling a single-chip solution that can run sophisticated operating systems and provide real-time responsiveness. The i.MX 7 series incorporates four independently controlled resource domains for maximum effectiveness and security when partitioning system resources such as memory and peripherals.”


The i.MX 7 applications processor is a Freescale Energy-Efficient Solutions product and is supported by companion Freescale PF3000 power management ICs (PMICs). Adding further, it states that with integration of power management, system control, battery management, interface and audio functions, as well as other system specific functions, the PMICs from Freescale are designed to offer optimum integration for a wide range of devices. Leveraging high-performance process technologies, Freescale PMIC’s offer high-efficiency solutions designed to extended battery life and reduce power dissipation.

Referring to the product availability, Freescale states that the i.MX 7Solo and i.MX 7Dual will be available by the end of 2015, while PF3000 PMIC is readily available for sampling with the company as well as their authorised distributor.
