New Low Height And High Speed Photocoupler For High Isolation Application


Toshiba has rolled out a new low height photocoupler which is suitably designed for applications requiring high isolation (isolation voltage of 5000Vrms min) with creepage and clearance distance of 8mm. It also combines 15Mbps high-speed communication with low power consumption as mentioned in the release.

Photocoupler is a component that transfers electrical signals between two isolated circuits by using light. It prevents high voltages from affecting the system receiving the signal. Clearance and creepage distances are two key external dimension requirements to support safe insulation requirement. Clearance distance is the shortest distance between the input and output terminals through air. The key objective of sufficient clearance distance is to ensure that no electrical flashover can occur across the terminals. Another important external dimension is its creepage distance. This is the shortest measured distance around the body of the package. The reason why this dimension is considered important is that in some circumstances, a conductive tracking path can start to form along the insulation surface. Factors which influence this are external pollution such as moisture and dust, and the propensity of the insulation material surface to attract and retain pollution. The creepage distance is dependent on the external environment, the so called pollution degree and the material category of the over-mould material.

According to the press release, “The Toshiba TLP2761 consists of a high-output GaAℓAs light-emitting diode coupled with integrated high gain, high-speed photo-detectors. It is housed in the SO6L package. This photocoupler guarantees operation at up to 125°C and on supplies from 2.7V to 5.5V. Since TLP2761 has guaranteed 1mA low supply current (ICCL/ICCH), and 1.6 mA (Ta = 125°C) low threshold input current (IFHL), it contributes to energy saving of devices. It can drive directly from a microcomputer for a low input current. The TLP2761 has an internal Faraday shield that provides a guaranteed common-mode transient immunity of ±20 kV/μs.”
