Maxim Integrated has unveiled new isolated RS-485 Transceivers offering high efficiency and robust communications for designing industrial automation equipment. Other applications include programmable logic controllers (PLC), HVAC, and power meters. New high-efficiency products include the MAX14853, MAX14855,  MAX14943 and MAX14949 transceivers.

To simplify power and data isolated designs, the new transceivers provide a high level of integration by incorporating integrated transformer drivers and low drop out (LDO) regulator. Also, each device provides up to 80% efficiency at 150mA load with an integrated transformer driver.

The devices are available as full or half duplex and allow for robust communication up to 25Mbps. The devices offer robust communication with 2.75kVrms and 5kVrms isolation options.Isolation improves communication by breaking ground loops and reduces noise when there are large differences in ground potential between ports. For instance, the MAX14853/MAX14855 isolated RS-485/RS-422 transceivers provide 2.75kVrms of galvanic isolation between the cable-side (RS-485/RS-422 driver/ receiver-side) and the UART-side of the device.

We integrated an LDO to regulate the isolated power and provide designers with a smaller solution and lower system cost “, said Timothy Leung, Senior Business Manager at Maxim Integrated.

Evaluation kits for both the devices are available. The MAX148X2 evaluation kit is available for the MAX14853 and MAX14855 while the MAX149X2 evaluation kit can help to start designing with the MAX14943 and MAX14949.

The transceivers are available in a 16-pin W-SOIC package (11mm x 11mm) and specified over the -40 deg C to +105 deg centigrade temperature range.
