Industry’s Top Reference Design For High-Brightness (HB) LED Drivers

There has been a growing demand for LED products in recent times. The ongoing improvement in LED technology can produce devices with greater luminous efficacy than the conventional lamps. High brightness LED, often referred to as HBLED is a measure of LED that can produce over 50 lumens. HBLEDs has already surpassed incandescent and halogen lamps as the compact LED lights provide improved efficiency with long life. Limiting the flow of current regardless of input and output conditions, the arrangement of LEDs and luminare’s specification dictate the fundamental of driver requirement in the circuit. ZMOTION enabled HBLED Driver Reference Design:
The following HBLED driver can uniquely control lighting through motion sensing in a defined area. The LED driver leverages ZMOTION technology from Zilog that relies on warm body motions to trigger a set of desired reactions apart from providing power sensing. Current Controlled HBLED Design:

The following reference designs of Maxim, refers to attaining long-life high brightness(HB) LEDs by regulating the flow of current in the circuit. The designs talk about three differenet methods of regulating current i.e. by using resistors, by active linear control-loop (a linear loop controlling LED current) or by switching regulator control (temperature compensation). Power Saving LED Driver:

The ST Microelectronics reference design for HBLED guarantees the same brightness for all LEDs with reduced power consumption. The LED driver features unique auto-power saving that reduces overall power consumption. This added property minimises the quiescent current if no active data is detected on the latches and automatically powers-up the device as soon as the active data is latched. PWM Based HBLED Reference Design:

The uniquely designed RT8473 high brightness LED driver from Richtek, uses hysteretic control (time-based dependence of a system’s output on current and past inputs) with a high-side current sense resistor to set the constant output current (1A).
