The all new plug and play multi-channel digital isolator from Silicon Labs is all set to offer integrated solution for signal and power isolation in industrial automation. Traditionally, the design included discreet power isolators where the designers had to start from the scratch which was time consuming, frustrating and costly affair as it required discreet components like commonly used field-effect transistors (FETs), controllers, single-channel isolators or optocouplers, and other components. In contrast to the conventional design, the new plug and play isolators ultimately save multiple design iterations and reduce bill-of-materials (BOM) cost and design complexity while enhancing noise immunity and power efficiency.
According to the press release, “The Si88xx family of products combine high speed digital isolators with an isolated power supply. The Si88xx has up to four high speed digital isolation channels integrated with a modified fly-back topology based dc-dc converter. The dc-dc converter works in conjunction with an external transformer to provide up to 2W of isolated power that can be used to supply the secondary side of the Si88xx as well as other circuits on the isolated side. The converter provides a high efficiency of 78 per cent. It includes built-in secondary sensing and feedback through the isolation barrier back to the controller to achieve excellent line and load regulation for system stability. The converter also includes safety features like soft start, thermal detection and cycle by cycle current limiting.”
Re-iterating the fact that Si88xx family reduces system cost, speeds time-to-market and enhances reliability the media release states that the digital isolator is suitable for applications in harsh, noisy operating environments including factory automation, process control, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), solar inverters and automotive battery management.
Samples and production quantities of Si88xx digital isolators are available now in 20-pin WB SOIC packages. Ordering options include a choice of dc-dc converter features, isolation channel configurations and a fail-safe mode. All Si88xx products are certified by UL, CSA, VDE and CQC. Si88xx family pricing in 10,000-unit quantities begins at US$ 2.42 (USD). To help developers evaluate the performance of Si88xx isolators, Silicon Labs’ Si88xx ISO-KIT evaluation kit is available now for US$ 29 (USD MSRP), highlights the company release.
